Artist and Designer

Charlotte Perriand

About the designer

Charlotte Perriand (1903-1999) was a pioneering French architect and designer known for her innovative contributions to modern furniture and interior design. She is particularly celebrated for her collaborations with prominent figures like Le Corbusier and Pierre Jeanneret. Her work helped shape the modernist movement in the 20th century, emphasizing functionality, simplicity, and the use of new materials.

Perriand was born in Paris and studied at the École de l'Union Centrale des Arts Décoratifs from 1920 to 1925. Her early work was influenced by the Art Deco movement, but she soon transitioned to modernism after being exposed to the ideas of Le Corbusier.

In 1927, she joined the studio of Le Corbusier and Pierre Jeanneret, where she made significant contributions to their furniture designs. Some of her most famous pieces from this period include the LC4 Chaise Longue, the LC2 Grand Confort armchair, and the LC1 Sling Chair. These designs are characterized by their use of tubular steel, leather, and innovative forms that prioritized comfort and practicality.

She left Le Corbusier’s studio in 1937 to pursue her independent projects. Her work continued to evolve, incorporating natural materials and influences from Japanese design after spending time in Japan from 1940 to 1942. Perriand’s later work often integrated traditional craftsmanship with modernist principles.

Charlotte Perriand is remembered as a trailblazer in the field of design, breaking gender barriers in a male-dominated profession. Her work continues to be celebrated for its timeless elegance, functional design, and innovative use of materials. Her contributions have had a lasting impact on modern furniture design and architecture.
